Benefits of Wine

Scientists and researchers have been proclaiming the health benefits of drinking wine for years. The key to wine’s health benefits is, of course, MODERATION. Discover a few of the many health benefits wine consumption offers.

Raises Good Cholesterol

Multiple studies show that wine, either red or white, raises your High-Density lipids (HDL) cholesterol levels. HDL cholesterol is often referred to as “good” cholesterol. This type of cholesterol actually helps to reduce the fat on the walls of your arteries; by carrying it away from the arterial walls and delivering it to the liver. The liver then processes these fats into waste and your body eliminates them.
Because wine is packed with resveratrol, it’s been found to help lower “bad”—or LDL—cholesterol levels; which will keep your heart healthy says the Mayo Clinic.

Free Radicals

Here’s a really oversimplified explanation of a free radical: Free radicals are basically groups of atoms that attack healthy cells, causing cell damage.
The substances—which are found in the skin of grapes; protect your cells against the harmful effects of free radicals, says the Mayo Clinic. Antioxidants help to counteract the damage done by free radicals. The flavonoids and resveratrol in wine act as antioxidants to battle free radical cell damage.

Anxiety

Wine is pretty great at relieving stress—and there’s even a 2014 study backing that up. According to researchers, the resveratrol in reds acts as a stress reliever of sorts; to help you relax and wind down after a long day. Wine acts as a mild natural sedative. One five-ounce glass of wine helps to relieve anxiety and tension. When stressed out, the heart pumps faster and works harder; putting people with high-stress levels at an increased risk for heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. The anti-anxiety effect of wine helps to slow the stressed-out heart rate; to more normal, healthier levels and lowers blood pressure.

Arteries

Resveratrol—one of the key ingredients in red wine; keeps the heart healthy by preventing damage to blood vessels and preventing blood clots, says the Mayo Clinic.  Scientists have proven that the antioxidants in wine slow the development of arterial plaque buildup. By doing so, wine helps to prevent atherosclerosis, thereby, helping to slow or prevent heart disease.

Ulcer Preventative

A 2003 study by the American Journal of Gastroenterology; shows that those who drink wine regularly reduce their risk of developing peptic ulcers; by helping the body get rid of the specific bacteria known to cause these types of ulcers. The study did note, however, that the consumption of wine must be moderate; and overconsumption leads to an increased risk of developing peptic ulcers. Another thing regarding the stomach is; stomach acid (also known as gastric acid) is needed to properly digest your food. And one study found alcoholic beverages with low ethanol content like wine actually stimulate the acid; helping digestion run its course more smoothly.

Heart Health

The heart experiences many health benefits from drinking wine. Aside from the cholesterol and anti-anxiety benefits mentioned earlier; moderate and regular consumption of wine helps to prevent a heart condition known as cardiac fibrosis. Cardiac fibrosis occurs when proteins build in the heart valves, resulting in thickening. When this thickening occurs, the heart beats far less efficiently. Wine helps to prevent these proteins from forming inside the heart valves.
All the resveratrol in wine pays off: The natural antioxidant found in red varieties increases your levels of good cholesterol and lowers your levels of bad cholesterol. Which protects your heart against cholesterol buildup and prevents heart attacks from occurring, says the Mayo Clinic.

Anti-Inflammatory

Regular and moderate consumption of wine has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show, inflammation – your body’s response to injury or infection—can be damaging over time. And it’s also responsible for chronic diseases. One study found that the resveratrol in red wine could help prevent life-threatening inflammation; by stopping the body from creating a couple of the most well-known inflammation-triggering molecules.

Increased Lung Function

Red wine gets most of the attention, but white wine is better at keeping the lungs healthy. In a 2002 study; participants took lung function tests that measured how much air they could blow out in one breath. Researchers found that those who drank white wine in moderation had the best results; due to its antioxidant properties. Also, another health benefit of drinking white wine is that flavonoids and other antioxidants show to increase lung function; making them work more efficiently.

Blood Vessel Protection

Polyphenol compounds found in wine, known as procyanidins, help to protect the blood vessels from damage. They also work to protect the endothelium. The endothelium is protective tissue around the heart and the blood vessels. Also, in a small 2008 study; researchers found having a drink of either red or white wine can benefit your blood vessels; making them more dilated—or “relaxed”—and decreasing the heart’s overall workload.

Brain Function

A preliminary 2006 study conducted by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology; showed that regular and moderate consumption of wine helps to slow memory loss; as well as prevent the brain cells from dying. This lowers the risk for dementia and dementia-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
